Unlearning and Learning

Unlearning and Learning

Unlearning is as important as Learning!

Visualize a Rocket Launch!

The booster enables the rocket to take off. Once the rocket has taken off, the booster must be dropped into the Ocean!

It's funny. Isn't it?

Without the booster the rocket cannot take off; and after that stage, with the booster the rocket cannot meet its goal; the booster is a clear baggage for the rocket after it has taken off.

This is true for many aspects in life (professional and personal). Every skill or information has its own Time and Space. It is very critical at some stage and becomes a baggage at some other stage. Much of problems arise from our inability to drop what was important or what was greatly value-adding earlier!

If we cling on to everything, failure is inevitable!!

In an organisation, the very same competencies that helped a professional to grow to one position, stop him from growing further up--since he/she refuses to let go of the competencies that were developed with great effort!!

Marshall Goldsmith, in his wonderful book "What Got You Here Won't Get You there", has powerfully brought out the functional behaviours becoming dysfunctional at a different stage!
